Cape Cod Crossroads

Spring/Summer 2003

I have put this off too long – must be the weather. It is past time to write my last letter as President of the Holy Cross Club of Cape Cod. For me it has been two years very good years. What has made my job easy is the great Board of Directors who have spent a lot of time making events successful and the alumni who have supported the events.

Year in Review

As most of you are aware the year concluded with the Annual Dinner in May. Father Michael C. McFarland SJ, President of Holy Cross was the guest speaker. He brought us up to date on what is going on at the school and the accomplishments of some of the students. Peter Smith ’63 was named Crusader of the Year. At the meeting Peter Acton who was my “Dick Chaney” was elected President and Dick Richard 1959 Vice President.

Other activities included a bus trip to the Holy Cross Harvard Football game, the annual Memorial Mass and Brunch, a Christmas party and three luncheons. Events were well attended and a good time was had by all.

After having three students last summer, this year we will not have any summer interns. In its place the board voted to award a $1000 scholarship to a HC student from Cape Cod who is entering their Sophomore, junior or senior year. The award will be for one year and give the board a chance to evaluate the feasibility of the intern program going forward.

Our Web Site (http://capecod.HCalumni.org) continues to be well utilized. This year we added sponsors. Cost to be a sponsor is $25. In return you get your company listed. Most of the sponsors are professionals Dentists, Doctors, lawyers. I encourage you to check out the site and add yourself to our e-mail list. We average no more than 10 mailings a year. It allows to keep current when you fly south to avoid the snow.

Membership is at 120. A few more than two years ago. I suspect it is because people are living longer more healthy lives. Fellowship contributions were less than in prior years. If you want more detailed information on the club’s financial health contact our Treasurer Peter Smith 1973 at psmith@ccbt.com or 508 394 2222. The club operates at breakeven. The largest expense is our annual donation to Holy Cross $1000.

Next year we will be following the same basic format. The Holy Cross Harvard football game in Worcester on September 20th will be our first event. A deluxe motor coach will deliver us to Freshman Field where we will tail gate prior to the game. Mark you calendars for this event. Last year was fun – remember the HC 75 yard punt return for a touchdown!!! A play to remember. There will be three luncheons, a Memorial Mass and brunch in November, a Christmas party and the annual dinner.

We are also evaluating a bus trip to a basketball game. It would probably be a double header – men’s and women’s. Last year both teams made the NCAA tournaments. Weather and snow birds are our concerns.

If you have an opinion on this event or have suggestions for the club contact our new president Peter Acton at maction3773@aol.com . We do listen to you. Last year I got a call from a widow expressing some concerns. As a result, I ask our nominations committee to find a widow to serve on the board so they would be represented. I am pleased to report that at our annual meeting we elected two women who are widows to our board. One is a widow of an alumnus and the other the mother of five daughters who graduated from Holy Cross. We also elected a second woman alumnus from the class of ’79. The Board now has 20 members – 16 men and 4 women.

In closing I want to thank you for your support. Without you there would not be a Holy Cross Club of Cape Cod. I have enjoyed meeting you and look forward to seeing you again next year.

Thomas Kennedy ´58 / President
